participation in the beekeeping, and honey value addition in Tanzania.<br /><br />The assurance has been unveiled by Head of Natural Resources at the European Delegation in Tanzania, representing the European Union (EU), Lamine Diallo during his remarks at the opening of the country’s maiden honey show exhibition, Tanzania Honey Show 2024.<br /><br />He emphasized that gender inclusion in the beekeeping sector, especially empowering women beekeepers to venture more wide and professional in honey processing and value addition was necessary for the sustainable development of the apiculture industry in Tanzania.<br /><br /><br />Diallo expressed that Tanzania is globally renowned for high quality honey which is being exported to various international markets, contributing significantly to the economy of the country, but efforts must be put in place to attract more women in the sector.<br /><br />“It is for this reason that EU is a committed partner in supporting beekeeping industry in Tanzania,” he said.<br /><br />According to him, EU is financing a total of 10 million Euros, equivalent to 28 billion TZS, through implementing Beekeeping Value Chain Support (BEVAC) project in Tanzania, the critical initiative dedicating to enhancing beekeeping value chain in Tanzania.<br /><br /><br /><a /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />“The project, BEVAC, is being implemented by Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency through funds from European Union (EU), and it operates under the coordination of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and it has already impacted more than 4,100 beekeepers and other stakeholders in Tanzania, including women beekeepers,” he said.<br /><br />Through the project, he informed that a number of local beekeepers have already been trained to implement more technique and suitable practices, added: “This initiative is essential for enhancing productivity and ensuring production of high quality honey, as well as other bee products,”<br /><br />He added that the EU was working to open new markets for the Tanzania’s honey, both locally and internationally, the initiatives which go in tandem with initiatives on quality standards and certification to help expanding marketability and competitiveness of Tanzania’s honey at the global stage.<br /><br />“Particularly, the projects is putting in place the laboratory equipment at the National beekeeping Laboratory with an eye to strengthen the country’s capacity in analyzing and provide certified assurances of the quality of the Tanzanians honey as per the international standards,” he observed.<br /><br /><br /><a /></a><br /><br /><br />Another particular contribution by the project is construction of a modern dormitory for sheltering women students at the Tabora-based Beekeeping Training Institute (BTI), at a cost of around 1million Euro, according to him.<br /><br />In her remarks to grace the three-day event which is taking shape at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre (JNICC) under the theme of ‘Beyond Hives, Beyond Boarders’, Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Angellah Kairuki hailed the EU for their continued efforts to support the sector.<br /><br />The Minister said the beekeeping sub-sector was employing over 2 million people in the country and despite offering numerous socioeconomic benefits from individual to the national level its players are lacking needed financial assistance.<br /><br />“The government values the supports that are being injected by different stakeholders towards supporting the local beekeepers to transform their executives,” she expands invitations to interested beekeeping actors worldwide to attend the upcoming Apimondia congress as well as enhancing national promotion. Interchick Company Ltd and the Poultry Association of Tanzania (PAT) to mention but a few.<br /><br />The hatched initiative, is a brainchild of the Southern Africa Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative (AID-I) Rapid Delivery Hub, the $50million worth 36 month initiative which is being implemented in the four countries of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania, focusing to reach out to a total of 3 million beneficiaries. <br /><br />Speaking yesterday during launching of the initiative, Adolf Jeremiah, the research coordinator for ILRI in Tanzania expressed that the initiative was working to empower the poultry farmers in the region to modern technologies so as to execute their activities more commercially and with needed productivity.<br /><br /><br both rural and urban areas of Dodoma region.<br /><br />"Poultry, if managed professionally, is a simple and short-term income generating project which can allow the involved households to escape from the shackles of poverty, " he observed. <br /><br />Under the project’s rolling-out, he detailed that the county's key chicken producer companies will hatch and produce to the farmers the best improved and vaccinated chicken breeds, and there will be a constructive move to sensitize the financial institutions to inject the farmers will friendly capital loans.<br /><br /><br /><a Production (WAP) Africa 2017, United Nations (FAO) statistics and Netherlands Africa Business Council (NABC) analysis 2017 shows that Tanzania produces more chicken layers, broilers than neighbouring Kenya and Uganda.<br /><br />He further detailed, the market growth for the sector in Tanzania is currently at 5 percent potentially, reaching $403million as of 2023.<br /><br /><br /><a least 450,000 metric tons (MT) as poultry and livestock companies either reduce their stock, or exist production due to high protein food crops.<br /><br />"As per the report in question, local feed in Tanzania is indeed a significant breakthrough for agricultural development, particularly for smallholder farmers who are engaging into the key sub-sector.<br /><br />Giving an exclusive interview to this publication concerning efforts to help cassava farmers in the country to adopt certified seeds in order to improve yields, Dr. Regina Kapinga, Head of Advocacy and Resource Mobilization from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) unveiled that the experts and stakeholders in the crop have already started to take some useful strategies.<br /><br />According to her, the instrumental strategies and efforts have seen key research institutions bridging efforts and expertise to produce certified cassava seed varieties to help farmers to overcome the challenge of TZS 3 billion and was planted at least 7,000 hectares.<br /><br />On the other hand, he cited key challenges in meeting targets outlined in the National Cassava Development Strategy (NCDS) 2020 – 2030.<br /><br />"By 2030, the plan is to distribute at least 3.5 billion cassava cuttings, and 30 percent of the total area under the cassava crop should be planted with improved varieties.
