PUPILS from at least 100 primary schools across Tanzania are benefiting from a tailor- made USD10 million worth project which is focusing to foster creativity and innovation through use of special learning kits, known as Lego Bricks'.
Dubbed 'PlayMatters' the -five year robust project is a brainchild of International Rescue Committee, under the financial auspicious of Lego Foundation, and it is being implemented in sync with other key stakeholders, including Planning International, Innovation for Poverty Action (IPA) the Behavioural Insight Team and War Child, as well as the government.
Giving an exclusive interview to this publication at the ongoing observations of the National Education, Skills and Innovation Week 2024 in Tanga region, Ms. Juliana Dyegura, the Technical Lead for PlayMatters project expressed that the initiative was further working to heighten perfomance of health, education, and child protection areas, among others.
She briefed that, pupils in at least five regions of Mara, Mwanza, Simiyu, Mtwara and Dodoma are positively impacted by the helpful project.
"The project involves an array of crucial initiatives, all aiming to improve pupil's physical and cognitive growth, psychological ability, but also to expose them to clouds-connected digital creativity portals,"she briefed.
And she added, the six bricks concept was introduced in 2023 to schools by PlayMatters project, saying the useful training technical was created by Care for Education.
"The concept based on the creative application of lego bricks to education activities," he informed.
To have the project’s goal achieved, Dyegura added the project was rolling out special training towards teachers, primary schools headmasters and members of schools committees on how bravely to make fruitful use of the Lego Bricks to help spur pupils teaching- learning process in schools.
"The focus is to promote and improve spirit of innovation, technology and creativity towards the pupils across the involving schools, the key development for their tomorrow's future, as well as the national economy as a whole," she added.
Apart from training, she detailed that the project was dishing out different relevant facilities to the schools in order to enable the trachers to stand on a professional side to assist the pupils to aquire the targeted skills.
The future focus, according to her is to extend the key services to more schools in more regions, depending on availability of resources.
"Currently, we're working in partnership with the Tanzania Institute of Education (TEI) to develop a special training guideline, being partly to bolster the training in question "
"And PlayMatters project is sparking lifelong learning through play," Dyegura expounded.
Giving more details, she communicated that the NGO, International Rescue Committee, is executing at least eight major initiatives in Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania at a general cost of around USD 100 million.
The ongoing project incorporate UNHCR Main Award, Profutulo, Pop- Up, EMPP, WUSC; Shule Bora and Instant Network Schools (INS).
