The event, which was supported by Cultural Survival, emphasized the need for continued efforts to combat FGM and hold offenders accountable.<br /><br />Longido District Development Officer, Rashid Hussein, stated that despite government crackdowns, FGM practices were still being carried out covertly during baptism celebrations. "We have identified this strategy, and we have instructed local leaders, from the ward office , to monitor and report any FGM activities during such ceremonies," said Hussein.<br /><br /> He also warned that some village leaders had attempted to resolve FGM cases informally, cautioning that the government would take legal action against any leader who turned a blind eye to the issue.<br /><br />The Longido District Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Matthew Majani, expressed concern over the health risks associated with FGM. He revealed that some women arrive at hospitals weakened from a lack of proper nutrition during pregnancy, as they are often denied food with the misguided belief that it would make childbirth easier. <br /><br />This practice, combined with the complications of FGM, has led to obstructed labor and other dangerous complications during delivery. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;">"These women are arriving at our hospitals too weak to give birth safely because they are not being fed properly during pregnancy." He said<br /><br /> This must stop, especially given the government's efforts under President Samia Suluhu to build more health centers and hospitals," said Dr. Majani. He added that FGM has been linked to maternal and infant deaths due to excessive bleeding and the inability to deliver safely.<br /><br />Mussa Juma, Executive Director of MAIPAC, explained that the new project emerged from an investigative study by journalists in the Longido District. Despite the government's efforts to combat FGM, they found that young girls were still being subjected to the harmful practice.<br /><br /> "We sent journalists to investigate, and the findings motivated us to seek funding to intensify our efforts to raise awareness and fight FGM. We are grateful to Cultural Survival for their support," said Juma.<br /><br />One of the survivors of FGM, Merikinoi Orkesyanye, shared her experience, revealing that she has given birth to eight children, but during the delivery of her eighth child, she suffered complications due to the effects of FGM. "We are suffering because of FGM. I am grateful to the doctors here who helped me, and I urge other women and community elders to abandon this harmful practice for the sake of our health and our children," she said.<br /><br />Another speaker, Mary Laizer, shared her story of undergoing FGM but now dedicates herself to ensuring that her children, particularly her daughters, avoid the same fate. "I’ve made sure my daughter escaped FGM, and I will continue to fight to protect girls from this dangerous practice.<br /><br /> FGM has severe consequences, including excessive bleeding, loss of sexual pleasure, and, worst of all, the death of both mothers and children," Laizer stated as she demonstrated the various forms of FGM and the damage they cause. She urged both men and women to unite in the fight against FGM.<br /><br />The MAIPAC project, in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the Tembo Organization and the Longido District Council, plans to visit various villages to raise awareness about the dangers of FGM. The initiative also includes the formation of anti-FGM committees in each village to combat the practice at the grassroots level.</span><br /></div></div>

Marry Masanja, noted that the government's investment in the project has yielded significant benefits, including an increase in the national grid's electricity capacity and the creation of numerous job opportunities for Tanzanians during the construction phase.<br /><br />“The government has invested TSh 6.55 trillion—Tanzanians' money—into this project. So far, TSh 6.15 trillion has been paid to the contractor. Once the project is fully completed, we will have an abundance of electricity and will even be able to sell power to neighboring countries," said Hon. Masanja.<br /><br />She further emphasized that the committee, which oversees government investments, is satisfied with the progress made on the JNHPP project and encouraged the government to continue investing in other strategic projects.<br /><br />"I congratulate our President, Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan, for her oversight in this major strategic project and for allocating funds for its construction. Today, the project is 98.99% complete. It is a source of pride for every Tanzanian, and I urge the government to continue investing in impactful projects like this one," added Hon. Masanja.<br /><br />Another member of the committee, Hon. Nicholaus Ngassa, the MP for Igunga Constituency, also praised the JNHPP, stating that it has significantly improved electricity supply across the country. He noted that many residents in Igunga now have access to reliable power.<br /><br />"Electricity supply has continued to improve. In Igunga, many people now have access to electricity. I urge the people of Igunga and other areas to use this electricity wisely, particularly by adopting it as a clean cooking energy source to preserve the environment and move away from using firewood and charcoal. The electricity is available, and the cost is affordable," remarked Hon. Ngassa.<br /><br />Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Mr. James Matarajio, highlighted those three turbines—units 9, 8, and 7—are already operational, contributing an additional 705 MW to the national grid. He added that two more turbines are undergoing testing, with unit 5 expected to be operational by November, and unit 3 slated to start in early 2025, bringing the total capacity to 2,115 MW.<br /><br />Mr. Matarajio also expressed gratitude to the committee for visiting the project and showing support for its progress.<br /><br />The JNHPP is one of Tanzania’s largest infrastructure projects, aimed at boosting the country’s electricity generation capacity and transforming it into a power hub in the region. Upon full completion, the project is expected to provide reliable and affordable energy, enhance industrialization, and create more opportunities for regional trade, particularly through exporting surplus electricity to neighboring countries. A total of 35 teams will participate in the 2024 Chem Chem Cup, costing about 78 million shillings to run the tournament.<br /><br />The 10th edition of the tournament was launched on Saturday (September 7) by Mbulu District Commissioner, Veronica Kessy on behalf of the Manyara Regional Commissioner, Queen Sendiga.<br /><br />Kessy praised the Chem Chem Association for supporting sports and conservation in Babati District.<br /><br />“We commend Chem Chem Association for promoting this tournament every year. It helps conserve the environment and fight poaching,” she said.<br /><br />She encouraged Babati residents to engage in conservation activities.<br /><br />“The government appreciates Chem Chem’s efforts. Conservation brings great benefits,” Kessy added.<br /><br />Clever Zulu, Chem Chem’s General Manager, said the Association will continue supporting the tournament.<br /><br />“This year’s theme is ‘Protect the Environment, Save the Giraffe.’ We expect many participants from the ten villages in the Burunge Wildlife Management Area,” Zulu said.<br /><br />John Bura, the tournament secretary, affirmed that a total of 35 teams will participate.<br /><br />“We have 18 senior football teams, 9 youth teams under 18, and 8 women’s teams,” he said.<br /><br />The winners in the men’s category will get a trophy and 2.5 million shillings. The second place will get 1.5 million shillings, and the third place will receive 1 million shillings.<br /><br />For the women’s teams, the winners will get 1.5 million shillings, second place 1 million shillings, and third place 500,000 shillings.<br /><br />“The youth champions will receive 1 million shillings, second place 600,000 shillings, and third place 400,000 shillings. The decline is attributed to a foreign-backed initiative known as the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), which Mpemba accuses of undermining local tour operators by labeling them as irresponsible.<br /><br />KPAP's influence has led to a significant shift in the local tourism market, with foreign travel agents now promoting their affiliated tour companies over local businesses. As a result, Tanzanian tour operators, who heavily rely on these agents to attract tourists, have seen their business dwindling.<br /><br />"The local tour companies are losing market share due to KPAP's smear campaign," Mpemba added. "Our porters are bearing the brunt of this crisis as job opportunities dry up."<br /><br />Local tour operator Yona Samwel of Almighty Kilimanjaro Ltd. echoed these concerns, criticizing KPAP for allegedly disparaging non-affiliated companies. "KPAP's campaign has damaged our reputation, forcing us to either partner with them or risk losing business altogether. This raises serious questions about the fairness of this arrangement," Samwel said.<br /><br />He highlighted that KPAP’s website lists 150 tour companies as "responsible," with 105 being foreign entities and only 45 local firms. This distribution has sparked outrage among local operators, who argue that the presence of foreign companies contradicts the 2008 Tanzanian Tourism Act, which mandates that Mount Kilimanjaro climbing operations be exclusive to local operators.<br /><br />"Why is KPAP allowed to vet foreign companies for Mount Kilimanjaro operations when Tanzanian law clearly states otherwise?" Samwel questioned. He has called on the government to investigate the situation urgently to prevent further damage to local businesses and protect the livelihoods of thousands of porters, tour guides, and cooks.<br /><br />The Tanzania Porters Organization (TPO) Executive Secretary, Mr. Loshiye Mollel, added that KPAP’s role was initially to protect porter rights but has seemingly expanded into regulatory areas typically managed by the government.<br /><br />In response, KPAP’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kelvin Salla, defended the organization’s role. "KPAP is focused on promoting responsible tourism and supporting companies that meet our certification criteria. The key points discussed and agreed upon include project framework based on the project design matrix (PDM) and plan of operation (PO).<br /><br />The stakeholders of the project include Ministry of Works, Tanzania Police Force (Traffic Division), Amana Regional Referral Hospital, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Regional Commissioner’s Office – Dar es Salam, Fire and Rescue Force, Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), among others.<br /><br />This “Project for Road Safety Strengthening” is based on the request from the Government of Tanzania submitted to the Government of Japan in August 2023.<br /><br /><br />JICA extends its sincere gratitude and appreciation to all road safety stakeholders who have contributed their inputs to the successful signing of the Minutes of Meeting. Their contributions were fruitful and constructive. <br /><br />During the signing of the Minutes of Meeting, Eng. Musa Kashinde, Director of Safety and Environment Unit of the Ministry of Works, said “We appreciate JICA’s technical cooperation project, and we expect it to begin smoothly."<br /><br />From JICA side, Mr. SUHARA Yasuhiro, Director Team1, Transportation Group Infrastructure Management Department, JICA Headquarters in Tokyo said, “JICA is committed to working together with the Government of Tanzania to address its road safety issues so that the project outcomes would be realized for the benefits of the country and the people.” <br /><br /><br />The prkoject aims at establishing road traffic accident databases and improving analytical capacities of road safety stakeholders; improving pre-hospital care services for the traffic accident victims; and enhnacing implementation capacity for the comprehensive measures centered on traffic safety education in schools (behavioral habit). <br /><br />The project is scheduled to start in February 2025 and will be completed in January 2028.<br /><br />The project expects to reduce accidents by conducting public awareness programs , especially to young drivers on road safety. Drivers and pedestrians who are aware of road safety are more likely to adopt responsible behaviours, such as wearing seat belts, adhering to speed limits, and avoiding distractions.<br /><br />Road safety education aspect of the project will foster a culture of safety that individuals carry throughout their lives, contributing to safer roads over time. Since the communities will be involved in road safety education then local knowledge and challenges can be addressed, leading to more tailored and effective safety programs.<br /><br />Moreover, the project advocates for a well-coordinated emergency response system that will significantly reduce the severity of injuries and fatalities in the event of a road accident. This will also ensure efficient deployment of emergency resources such as ambulances and first responders, as well as minimization of response times. Also, knowing that there is a reliable emergency response system in place gives the public confidence, encouraging safe road usage. In addition, swift and effective medical intervention can lead to better recovery outcomes for accident victims, reducing long-term health impacts and associated costs.<br /><br />The Project also focuses on establishment and analysis of road safety databases which will allow authorities to analyse trends, identify high-risk areas, and implement targeted interventions to improve road safety. Data from the database can inform the creation of policies and regulations that address the specific causes of accidents, making roads safer for everyone. On top of that, sharing data from the accident database with the public can raise awareness of common risks and promote safer behaviour on the roads. Finally, the database allows for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of road safety initiatives, helping to refine and improve strategies over time.<br /><br />JICA has been supporting transport sector in Tanzania for over 40 years, the first infrastructure projects supported by JICA being construction of Selander Bridge from 1980 to 1982. The Road Safety Strengthening Project is crafted from the recommendations of the Data Collection Survey for Road Safety in East African Community (2020) and Data Collection Survey on Road Safety Data and Management in Dar es Salaam (2021), all supported by JICA.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span><br /></div>

Eligi Kimario, the Assistant Director of the Wildlife Department, explained that the contract will help reduce these conflicts by ensuring wildlife can move freely between the parks.<br /><br />“There have been conflicts in the area, particularly after some residents-built houses and cultivated land within the wildlife corridor,” Kimario said.<br /><br />The Chem Chem Association will assist in managing the corridor and training staff to protect it. Khamis, the Director General (DG) of Tantrade, formalized the agreement, which aims to create new opportunities for Tanzanian exporters under the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS) program.<br /><br />"We are thrilled to announce this partnership with Tantrade," said Mr. Mukisa during a colorful signing ceremony of the crucial agreement.<br /><br />And he added: "This MoU will serve as the foundation for Tanzanian exporters to gain unprecedented access to the UK market, promoting economic growth and development in Tanzania. He called on the Prison Service to set up the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the Independent National Electoral Commission (NEC) in registering prisoners serving sentences of less than six months, as well as detainees.<br /><br />“This opportunity, enabled by the law passed by the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, allows prisoners to vote for their chosen leaders. This is the first time in our country’s history that prisoners and detainees are given the chance to vote while in prison,” Majaliwa stated.<br /><br />This policy shift follows the NEC’s announcement that prisoners serving sentences of less than six months will be included in the permanent voter register. Various stakeholders have since advocated for further amendments to allow all prisoners to vote, arguing that imprisonment should not strip individuals of their voting rights, as they are still governed by elected leaders.<br /><br />Tanzania’s move to enfranchise prisoners aligns with practices in several other African countries. For instance, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana have long allowed prisoners to vote, recognizing the importance of upholding democratic rights irrespective of incarceration. Tanzania, however, has lagged in this regard, primarily due to legal and logistical challenges and concerns over prison security and administration.<br /><br />Majaliwa also urged all election stakeholders, including the police force and immigration department, to visit voter registration centres to ensure that those ineligible to vote, particularly non-citizens, are identified and excluded from the voter rolls. This vigilance aims to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.<br /><br />The 2022 Population and Housing Census indicates that 5,586,433 new voters will be registered in the Permanent Voter Register. These include individuals who have turned 18 since the last general election in 2020 and those who will reach voting age by the 2025 election. Additionally, approximately 4,369,531 voters are expected to update their information.<br /><br />“This is not a small number for the voter register update exercise. Therefore, I urge every registered voter needing to update their information not to hesitate to visit the registration centers. Judithi Kapinga, during a working visit to the villages of Lubonde and Maweni in Ludewa district.<br /><br />Kapinga highlighted the government’s appreciation for the significant work done by the Catholic Church in collaboration with the government in various investment sectors. She instructed the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to oversee the contractor executing electrification projects in Ludewa, ensuring timely completion in the remaining eight villages.<br /><br /><br /><br />"Our goal is to continue generating more electricity to meet the increasing demand and to support projects that export electricity outside Tanzania," Kapinga stated.<br /><br />Previously, the Chairman of Madope Power Company, Father Innocent Ngailo, announced that the Catholic Church in Njombe had written to the government requesting Tanesco to take over Madope’s power infrastructure. He expressed gratitude for the government's positive response.<br /><br />Father Ngailo confirmed that Madope would continue to generate electricity, which it will sell to TANESCO.
