| Samwel Sitta the East Africa Cooperation Minister and Former Speaker of National Assembly |
Dodoma. The way is now clear for Mr Samuel Sitta to become chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA).
A day after he was touted as CCM’s nominee, many
CA members voiced their support for the East Africa Cooperation minister
and former Speaker of the National Assembly.
Among those who welcomed Mr Sitta’s candidacy was
Prof Ibrahim Lipumba, who told the assembly that the CCM politician
would be a worthy chairperson.
The entire house erupted in cheers after Prof
Lipumba’s endorsement, indicating that the Urambo East MP was likely to
register a landslide win in this week’s election.
It was reported yesterday that Mr Sitta and Ms
Samia Suluhu Hassan would seek the chairperson’s and deputy
chairperson’s positions, respectively.
Mr Sitta told The Citizen yesterday that he had
the necessary qualifications for the position, adding that he would
execute his duties without fear or favour if elected.
“I know that I don’t have a direct ticket to
become the Constituent Assembly chairman. But if elected I will be keen
in observing the requirements of standing orders, which are the
foundation of assembly sessions,” he said.
Ms Hassan, who currently serves as State Minister
in the Vice President’s office in charge of Union affairs, told
reporters that she was ready to serve in the post of deputy chairperson.
“If I have been able to lead an entire ministry
with mandate in both parts of the Union, how can I fail to preside over a
sitting that will last only three months?” she asked.
Reports from within CCM say Mr Andrew Chenge, who
was named as another potential candidate from the ruling party, decided
withdrew from the race after Mr Sitta’s name was proposed and supported
by many members during a party caucus.
Mr Sitta’s nomination was also seconded by a
long-serving parliamentarian Hezekiah, who noted that his track record
spoke for itself.
Singida East MP Tundu Lissu (Chadema) also
applauded Mr Sitta’s nomination, saying his performance as Speaker spoke
volumes about his abilities.
