In a significant stride towards rural transformation, the Rural Energy Agency (REA) has successfully electrified every village in Nyasa District, Ruvuma Region.
This landmark achievement was announced by the Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga, during a ceremony today, July 22, 2024, at Nyasa Secondary School in Chimate Village, Chiwanda Ward.
Deputy Minister Kapinga highlighted the unwavering commitment of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) and REA to ensure electricity reaches domestic homes and key social service areas. She emphasized that the next phase would focus on extending power to the hamlet level.
"Today's electrification agenda is part of a nationwide mission to deliver electricity to every corner of Tanzania," Kapinga remarked, underscoring the government's resolve to power all neighborhoods.
REA's Rural Electricity Project Engineer in Ruvuma, Eng. Robert Dulle reported that Nyasa District, comprising 84 villages, now enjoys complete electrification. Eng. Dulle elaborated that out of 421 hamlets in the district, 122 have been connected to electricity, with ongoing efforts to reach the remaining hamlets.
Looking ahead, REA's Phase 3 project aims to connect power to industries, mines, and agricultural zones, further fueling rural development.
Nationwide, REA recently announced the successful electrification of 12,031 villages, representing 98% of all villages across Tanzania. The remaining 287 villages are set to receive power by September this year, marking a new era of energy accessibility.
This electrification initiative marks a pivotal moment in Tanzania's journey towards comprehensive rural development, bringing light and opportunity to even the most remote areas.
