The leaders of the Burunge wildlife management Area, together with the leaders of the Babati District council, have learned the modern method of using electric wires to prevent wild animals such as elephants and lions from harming humans.
The leaders of the Burunge WMA, in the presence of members of the leadership committee (AA), members of the Board and leaders of the Babati District council and the department of wildlife in the Manyara Region, have made a two-day training visit to Ikona WMA with the funding of the Chemchem Association, which has invested in activities of conservation and Tourism in the Burunge WMA's
Executive Director of Babati District Council, Anna Mbogo who accompanied the leaders to learn how to control destructive wildlife has said, "I am impressed by this modern method that protects the environment" She said and added,
"I will sit with experts in Babati district to assess the costs of putting up the electric fence to protect the wetlands in the Burunge WMA which is an important part of the ecology of the area and save the people from the harm caused by wild animals," She said.
Secretary of Ikona WMA Yusuph Manyanda has said that despite using various methods including Pepper, Patrol, Education and Collaborative Protection from groups within the community to fight against invasive animals and cause harm to citizens but the use of electric fence has been more beneficial.
"The presence of the fence built by the Grumeti Fund Company has had a positive effect on the reserve and the residents because it has prevented interference, a situation that led the residents of the area to resume agricultural activities that they had abandoned for a long time for fear of destroying their crops," he said.
Emmanuela Galu Member of Burunge WMA has said, "the responsibility is left for us to provide education to breeders and farmers so that they can understand the various ways to control destructive wildlife, including the modern way to stop them without using much force" he said.
Felix Mwasenga, the Manyara Regional Wildlife Officer has thanked the Chem Chem Association that invested in Burunge WMA for facilitating the training tour, it has helped them gain knowledge that will help the Manyara community to reduce conflicts between them and wildlife
The manager of the Chem Chem Association, Clever Zulu, said the training visit was a great success.
He has said that in addition to finding modern methods to protect the sorghum, they have also learned to use electric fences to control conflicts between wildlife and humans.
"I believe our Burunge WMA leaders, Babati District council leaders and Manyara region will see the best way to completely end the problem of conflicts between animals and citizens but to take care of the sorghum," he said.
The chairman of Burunge WMA, Erick Lilayoni praised Chemchem for sponsoring the training but also Ikona WMA for giving them a good education.
"We have learned a lot and we are going to implement the Burunge WMA so that the people continue to benefit from conservation and tourism but also to increase income and resolve conflicts.
