The partnership, formalized by Mr. Ara Hitoshi of the JICA Tanzania Office and Dr. Natu Mwamba, Permanent Secretary of Tanzania's Ministry of Finance, underlines a robust commitment to infrastructure development and bilateral cooperation. This initiative, signed on July 11, 2024, marks a pivotal step towards fostering sustainable development and enhancing transport logistics across Lake Tanganyika and neighboring countries including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia. "The project will not only improve port facilities but also contribute to safer and more efficient transport logistics," stated Mr. Ara. The rehabilitation project encompasses the upgrade of passenger wharf facilities, the construction of a modern passenger terminal building, and the development of a reliable port access road. These improvements aim to streamline passenger and cargo handling, enhancing safety and efficiency while supporting economic activities along the shores of Lake Tanganyika and beyond. Japan's commitment to Tanzania's development dates back decades, with JICA playing a crucial role in various infrastructure projects across the country. Initiatives such as the Selandar Bridge construction, the rehabilitation of key roads, and the Rusumo International Bridge demonstrate Japan's enduring support for Tanzania's infrastructure development and economic growth. In his exclusive interview with 'Goshenipost' at the 48th Edition of the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair( DIFT 2024), IRDP's Deputy Rector, Academics, Research and Consultancy, Prof. Provident Dimoso said the move is part of concerted efforts by the facility to digitize its training formats. He hailed President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for injecting the college with enough budget to facilitate implementation of key projects to facelift training and office structures, the move which incorporated construction of modern dormitories. Talking over IRDP success within 45 years of operation, the Don unveiled that a total of 60,975 students have so far graduated from various courses pertaining to rural development planning. Established by the Parliamentary Act No. 8 of the 1980, Prof Dimoso said the college is mandated to accomplish three major tasks, including to roll out development planning courses, conduct research and to provide technical (Professional) advice. “We’re very proud as the majority of the college’s alumni are currently managing high-ranked positions at different levels within the country’s regional administration and local government, central government, as well as international organisation,” he said. In 1979, IRDP started to roll out its services by offering just one course, the Advanced Diploma in Regional Planning, involving 13 students who were trained by 14 tutors, he expressed. As part of impressive success, the Don said the college is currently harbours a total of 15,000 students under the two branches, in Dodoma and Mwanza, offering a total of 35 courses that are manned with over 250 professional teachers. </div>

This invasion is leading to severe food shortages and other critical needs for the Hadzabe community. The Hadzabe, a community that survives by hunting wild animals, and gathering roots, fruits, and honey, now has only about 500 people remaining in the district. In a recent discussion with journalists visiting their area to learn about their traditional environmental conservation knowledge, community leaders expressed an urgent need for assistance. This initiative is part of a project implemented by the Media Aid for Indigenous and Pastoralists Communities (MAIPAC), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the UNDP’s Small Grants Programme and the Office of the Vice President - Environment. Ng’washambi Kusombi, a leader of the Hadzabe community in Murusi camp, Qang’dend village, Baray ward, Karatu, highlighted that despite their traditional knowledge enabling them to preserve forests and water sources, their livelihood is now at risk. Kusombi stated that farmers and pastoralists have invaded their lands, cultivating crops, rearing livestock, cutting down trees, and producing charcoal, which has greatly affected their ability to find food and other necessities. "Previously, we could hunt wild animals nearby, but now we have to travel great distances. The fruits and roots we relied on have decreased because trees are being cut down for charcoal," Kusombi said. He also mentioned that even honey, a staple food for the Wahadzabe, is becoming scarce as the trees they use for beekeeping are being taken over by the invaders. "There are baobab trees that we used for beekeeping, but now we are told they are no longer ours, and we are forced to share the honey with those who claim ownership," Kusombi added. He also revealed that some village leaders have been secretly selling their land, despite the district council acknowledging that the land belongs to the Wahadzabe, though they have not been given formal ownership documents. Nyambulu Njegela, another community member, noted that wildlife has fled further away because of the environmental degradation caused by the invaders. "We now travel long distances to hunt. We usually hunt one large animal and do not hunt again until the meat is finished, but now there are no animals nearby," Njegela said. He emphasized that if the current situation is not controlled, their lives will be in jeopardy as even the caves they used to live in have been invaded by other communities. Juliana Yohana pointed out the additional burden on women, who now have to walk long distances to fetch water, gather roots for food, and collect medicinal plants. "We urgently need help to prevent further invasion of our land. They have discovered that the Wahadzabe community is at risk of extinction, and the government must intervene. "This community has preserved the environment; they do not cut trees, farm, or produce charcoal. However, there are numerous invaders farming on their land, cutting trees for charcoal, and have been allocated land by village leaders," he said. Through the GEF/UNDP project, they aim to disseminate this knowledge to the media to help communities preserve the environment, forests, and water sources. Donata Kimaro, Head of the Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Unit in Karatu District Council, stated that the council has begun addressing the land invasions affecting the Wahadzabe. Kimaro mentioned that the council had already developed a land-use plan for the Wahadzabe community areas, but there are still challenges in understanding among some village leaders and residents. Reginald Hallu, Karatu District Forest Officer, reported that the council has started arresting individuals invading Wahadzabe land, constructing buildings, farming, and producing charcoal illegally. "We already have several cases involving people who invaded Wahadzabe land and started producing charcoal. Some have paid fines and left. We warn that it is forbidden to invade land designated for the Wahadzabe community," Hallu stated. The Wahadzabe community continues to face significant challenges as their land and resources are encroached upon, threatening their traditional way of life and survival. He expressed optimism that if implemented constructively, the project will promote the use of alternative charcoal (safe charcoal) as a source of clean cooking energy, as well as protecting the environment across the country. REA is implementing the task of ensuring that all types of energy are available in rural areas and for all people, and added that they have been at the forefront of assisting developers of clean energy technologies and projects aimed at increasing access to clean cooking energy products. In the implementation of the countrywide project, REA is partnering with the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO), and has so far funded the purchase of three large machines for the production of charcoal. The project has been allocated a budget of 5bn/- and REA is implementing the task of ensuring that all types of energy are available in rural areas and for all people through assisting developers of clean energy technologies and projects aimed at increasing access to clean cooking energy products. During the last financial year, the government allocated 10bn/- for distribution of LPG and its burners, whereas to start with, each region was provided with 2,700 gas stoves, whereby at least 3bn/- has been spent as a subsidy to facilitate distribution of 71,000 gas stoves in rural areas. Moreover, during the financial year 2023/2024, the Agency distributed more than 158,100 cooking gas cylinders to rural citizens as part of the promotion of clean cooking energy, whereby a total of more than 400,000 cylinders will be distributed through the initiative. The project is being by REA in collaboration with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and it involves installation of a distribution pipeline of 44.4 -kilometre from Mnazi Mmoja – Lindi -Mkuranga and Coast Region and more than 980 households will benefit from it. Under the slogan of "Reliable Market, Sustainable Income, and Improved Livelihoods," this timely campaign focuses to foster development among cane farmers through strategic communication and collaboration with stakeholders. The campaign was officially launched during a well-attended function at the Kilombero Sugar Estate, drawing participation from regulators, local government officials, and cane farmers, all essential players in the sugarcane farming value chain. Following last season's challenges due to El Niño-induced heavy rains, Kilombero Sugar has taken proactive steps to reassure cane farmers. The company is nearing 90pecent completion of the K4 Expansion Project, the largest investment ever made by Illovo in Africa.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody></tbody></table> This monumental project underscores the company's confidence in the local grower community, which will supply 60% of the sugarcane required for the expanded operations. Speaking during launching of the robust campaign, Mr. Pierre Redinger, the Director for Grower Agriculture at Kilombero Sugar, emphasized the community's pivotal role in this venture. "Our investment in the K4 Expansion Project is rooted in the trust we have in our growers," Mr. Redinger stated. "This journey began in 2018 with the registration of intent by growers, supported by the Kilombero District Office, paving the way for this significant business case." The assurance has been unveiled by Head of Natural Resources at the European Delegation in Tanzania, representing the European Union (EU), Lamine Diallo during his remarks at the opening of the country’s maiden honey show exhibition, Tanzania Honey Show 2024. He emphasized that gender inclusion in the beekeeping sector, especially empowering women beekeepers to venture more wide and professional in honey processing and value addition was necessary for the sustainable development of the apiculture industry in Tanzania. Diallo expressed that Tanzania is globally renowned for high quality honey which is being exported to various international markets, contributing significantly to the economy of the country, but efforts must be put in place to attract more women in the sector. “It is for this reason that EU is a committed partner in supporting beekeeping industry in Tanzania,” he said. Dwelling on relevant technologies, she said the Institute has so far started disseminating the simple seed planter machinery named RAFIKIi Planter. "The machine which use only one litre petrol has been designed to facilitate planting of cotton, sunflower and maize. This farm mashine is a fast - operating machine which use only 45 minutes to maximum one hour to plant one acre and uses a single operator compared to the formal methods whereby more than 10 farners used to spend a day- long time to plant the same acreage," she detailed.
