hatched to expand access to improved breeds of dual-purpose backyard village chickens, especially commercial broilers and layers, and is expected to reach out to a total of 18,000 farmers in Dodoma rural and urban.<br /><br />Dubbed ‘Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative –Livestock’ (AID-L) Tanzania, the robust initiative which has been designed for implementation across all eight districts Institute (TALIRI), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and Land O lakes Venture 37.<br /><br />And the stakeholders in the project incorporate Silverlands Tanzania Limited, Interchick Company Ltd and the Poultry Association of Tanzania (PAT) to mention but a few.<br /><br />The hatched initiative, is a brainchild of the Southern Africa Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative (AID-I) Rapid Delivery Hub, the $50million worth 36 month initiative which is being implemented in the four countries of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania, focusing to reach out to a total of 3 million beneficiaries. <br /><br />Speaking yesterday during launching of the initiative, Adolf Jeremiah, the research coordinator for ILRI in Tanzania expressed that the initiative was working to empower the poultry farmers in the region to modern technologies so as to execute their activities more commercially and with needed productivity.<br /><br /><br improved food and nutrition security and rural incomes, saying it will run for 18 consecutive months.<br /><br />Among others targeted outcomes, according to Jeremiah is to further increasing access to improved breeds by the involved number of the project’s beneficiaries through women and youth -focused broader units and vendors. <br /><br />"The initiative will also work to heighten access to bundled advisory services, inputs, and off- takers through agri-entrepeneurs," he communicated. <br /><br />Talking about supporting cost- share of start-ups and scale-ups, he said the initiative target to increase business oriented for at least 80 women and youth broader, and 200 vendors through capacity building and actor linkages.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />"As per the project’s design, an entrepreneurial ecosystem approach to delivery module will be applied, to increase access to investment capital (cost shared and village saving and loan groups), " he expressed. <br /><br />To be implemented in the nature of gender- transformative in private sector - led, the robust project focuses to solve the myriad challenges troubling the poultry farmers, in both rural and urban areas of Dodoma region.<br /><br />"Poultry, if managed professionally, is a simple and short-term income generating project which can allow the involved households to escape from the shackles of poverty, " he observed. <br /><br />Under the project’s rolling-out, he detailed that the county's key chicken producer companies will hatch and produce to the farmers the best improved and vaccinated chicken breeds, and there will be a constructive move to sensitize the financial institutions to inject the farmers will friendly capital loans.<br /><br /><br /><a <br /><br />She observed, basing on the fact that at least 72 percent of the people in the region are banking on farming and livestock, the initiated project was meaningful to scale up the economy of agency and a catalytic actor have decided to fund the initiative with an eye to improve productivity in the poultry sector value chain in Dodoma region<br /><br />He briefed, the World Animal Production (WAP) Africa 2017, United Nations (FAO) statistics and Netherlands Africa Business Council (NABC) analysis 2017 shows that Tanzania produces more chicken layers, broilers than neighbouring Kenya and Uganda.<br /><br />He further detailed, the market growth for the sector in Tanzania is currently at 5 percent potentially, reaching $403million as of 2023.<br /><br /><br /><a hatcheries, breeds and research, " he informed. <br /><br />According to him, the USAID Grain and Feed Report of April 2024 depicts that feed consumption is anticipated to shrink by 10 percent, to at least 450,000 metric tons (MT) as poultry and livestock companies either reduce their stock, or exist production due to high protein food crops.<br /><br />"As per the report in question, local feed manufacturers reported that most soybeans extrusion in Tanzania have closed operations as they cannot source affordable soybeans for producing feed. varieties and seed dissemination channels have also been among key cassava production constraints across the country.<br /><br />To that end, the advancement in certified seed production for cassava in Tanzania is indeed a significant breakthrough for agricultural development, particularly for smallholder farmers who are engaging into the key sub-sector.<br /><br />Giving an exclusive interview to this publication concerning efforts to help cassava farmers in the country to adopt certified seeds in order to improve yields, Dr. Regina Kapinga, Head of Advocacy and Resource Mobilization from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) unveiled that the experts and stakeholders in the crop have already started to take some useful strategies.<br /><br />According to her, the instrumental strategies and efforts have seen key research institutions bridging efforts and expertise to produce certified cassava seed varieties to help farmers to overcome the challenge of diseases.<br /><br />“The vision of the on-going efforts is to develop disease-resistant cassava varieties and establish an economically sustainable seed system to provide farmers with high-quality planting material,” Dr Kapinga unveiled.<br /><br />She disclosed the institutions involving into the robust initiative as IITA, Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), and the Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI).<br /><br />“In the major initiative, the agricultural pundits from the mentioned institutions material in a controlled environment’’ She said. <br /><br />Dr Regina emphasized that, to achieve the last mile seed delivery to smallholder farmers, stallholders have been building the capacity of business-minded farmers called Cassava Seed Entrepreneurs (CSEs) and they are registered by TOSCI.<br /><br />“According to a thorough research conducted by IITA in collaboration with TARI, certified cassava seed has a yield advantage of at least 81 percent over recycled seed, which is a strong incentive,” Dr Kapinga unveiled.<br /><br /><br /><a Investment Forum in Dodoma Capital City. <br /><br />The gathering which attracted at least 150 delegates representing various sectors, including investors, policymakers, government officials, farmers, seed entrepreneurs, researchers, and development partners focused to discuss, reflecting on, and deliberating the business opportunities and challenges within Tanzania's cassava sub-sector.<br /><br />The event was graced by Dr. Hussein M. Omar, the Deputy Permanent Secretary on behalf of the Agriculture Minister, Hussein Bashe. <br /><br />In his remarks, among others, Dr Omar acknowledged the pivotal support of development partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and Cornell University in the efforts to spur the performance of the sector.<br /><br />He observed that, the initiatives like BASICSII, Muhogo Bora, and Next-Gen have significantly contributed to bolstering the country's cassava seed systems, ensuring the availability of 25 high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties, and facilitating the emergence of 1,000 youth and women-led cassava seed entrepreneurs who provide last-mile seed delivery to smallholder farmers.<br /><br /> In 2023, they sold 69 million cuttings with approx. TZS 3 billion and was planted at least 7,000 hectares.<br /><br />On the other hand, he cited key challenges in meeting targets outlined in the National Cassava Development Strategy (NCDS) 2020 – 2030.<br /><br />"By 2030, the plan is to distribute at least 3.5 billion cassava cuttings, and 30 percent of the total area under the cassava crop should be planted with improved varieties. skills on poultry project, and there will be several efforts to ensure they’re adopting improved crossbreed chicken as well as managing chicken disease,” he observed.<br /><br /> Through engaging into production include a sharp decrease availability of essential nutrients to crops, increased concentration of toxic elements (Aluminium) in soils thus damaging crop roots, decrease crop production, and during a series of potential 43 trials that were conducted in each of the two picked districts, maize and beans were the tested crops, and the treatments included control received the same amount of fertilizers, but applied with different rates of ag-lime.<br /><br /><br /><a implementation of the helpful initiative across all areas with acidic soils in the country.<br /><br />The institutions include the Southern Agriculture Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), Alliance for Green Revolution in Agriculture (AGRA), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Center for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), to mention but a few.<br /><br />In his remarks to open the workshop, the Director for Crops Development for the Ministry of Agriculture, Nyasebwa Chimagu, who officiated the meeting, expressed that increasing crops production and productivity was among the currently priorities by the parent apply to have the farmers under soil acidity adopting proper use of ag-limes.<br /><br />“Majority of the farmers are not aware of the use of ag-lime as they have for years been sensitized to only use fertilizer, so the project must come-up with a useful and simple approach to empower them,” he suggested.<br /><br />And he added, the project must sensitize the lime producing factories to expand production so as to ensure for availability, accessibility and affordability of agricultural limes towards the intended farmers in the needed areas.<br /><br />Adding his voice to the meeting’s objectives, the Director General (DG) of the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Dr Thomas Bwana, observed that acidic soils was standing tall among the major factor that diluting efforts by the country’s agriculture system to attain the needed crops production and productivity.<br /><br />He added, the so far conducted trials by TARI in Mbozi and Geita have proved that use of ag-limes can help to double maize yields in acidic soil areas.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a of acid soils.<br /><br />“The project’s primary target include Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Eastern & Southern Africa and West Africa,” he expounded, added.<br /><br /><br /><a /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />In his presentation, entitled ‘Guiding Acid Soil Management in Tanzania’, Dr Sibaway Mwango, the National Coordinator Agricultural Natural Resources Management from TARI detailed that although agriculture plays a vital role to the livelihood of Tanzanians, the sector is however facing many challenges which impede crop productivity and production.<br /><br />The challenges, according to him incorporate low knowledge of soil health, inappropriate use of fertilizers, depleted soil fertility, inappropriate agronomic practices, and low knowledge on land suitability (where to grow what).<br /><br />“There are two types of soil acidity, active and exchangeable soil acidity, whereby active soil acidity is easy to measure and can easily be corrected by liming, but it is difficult to measure exchangeable acidity as you are required to measure aluminium and hydrogen concentrations,” he observed.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />He informed that, at present in Tanzania, aluminium cannot be measured by neither soil scanners, nor pH meters as its correction may require huge amounts of lime and many cycles of re-application.<br /><br />Detailing over the acidity saturation in soils of Tanzania, Dr Mwango said about 53 percent to 71 percent of applied fertilizers are lost, which means for every 100/- invested in fertilizers between 53/- and 71/- are not beneficial to the crop.<br /><br />Wrapping up the meeting, the involved stakeholders informed that, combining ag-lime and mineral fertilizers in appropriate rates can possibly increase yield three times for maize, and two times for bean, respectively in Geita district, whereby the trials proved that maize increased from 5bags/acre to 15bags/acre, and beans increased from 1.0bag/acre to 3.3bags/acre.<br /><br />According to them, the same treatment increased yield 1.8 times and 1.7 times for maize and beans, respectively in Mbozi district, in which maize increased from 10bags/acre to 18bags/acre, and beans increased from 2.0 bags/acre to 3.4bags/acre.<br /><br />It was concluded in acidic soils that application of fertilizers alone without liming cannot increase crop yields appreciably.<br /><br /><br /><a problems because soil acidity causes between 20 and 80 percent loss of fertilizers applied in acid soils.<br /><br />They said lime application will correct this loss if targeted to the areas and thus, it is recommended to develop a program that makes lime easily accessible to farmers.<br /><br />Moreover, they stated that lime availability is limited in areas affected by acid soils and however, lime deposits are located in areas where acidity is a problem.
