The robust initiative came to light during the 8th Annual General Meeting of the Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) held yesterday in Dodoma City, attracting key agroecology stakeholders, pundits as well as farmers from different regions across the country. Among others, we’re focusing on identifying and improving the Quality Declared Seeds (QDS) varieties for both conventional and organic farming,” he detailed. He insisted that the parent ministry will continue standing firmly to iron out all hiccups that tend to derail and upset efforts by indigenous organic farmers to realize enough crop yields, but also in accessing the necessary agro inputs, including bio-pesticides, organic fertilizers and others. Apart from hailing TOAM for excellence performance, he challenged the Movement to develop a vast countrywide organic forum, one that will further help to accelerate awareness over importance of the environmental friendly farming system across the country, and in East Africa at large. “Organic farming is useful for both, food security and safety and the country has been endowed with potential agroclimatic zones that support biological farming and thus what is needed most is to lobby for more support from both the public and private sector,” he insisted. In further efforts to improve the sector, he said the government has developed meaningful policies and strategies, including the Agricultural Sector Development Programme (ASDP II), the 2017 Climate -Smart Agricultural Guideline “Later on this year, we’re expecting to embark on the effective implementation of the National Ecological Organic Agriculture Strategy, the eight-year initiative which has been coordinated by the ministry of agriculture to further create awareness over organic agriculture among local farmers and relevant stakeholders,” he added. For his part, TOAM Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Bakari Mongo said the Movement was well prepared to continue fueling a pace of biological agriculture among the local farmers across the country. “After passing through some tough years, TOAM is currently roaring back with a series of strategic plans to assure Tanzania become an important hub for agroecology across East and Central Africa,” he assured. The Minister unveiled the crucial plan for the metamorphosis of the sector when leading a special meeting of the ministry’s executives, heads of the public institutions under his ministry. Impeccable statistics depicts that there are at least 38 wildlife management areas (WMAs) across the country, out of which, only 16 WMA's have investors, whereby the trend proves that most of the investors are on the way to halt their investments due to failure by the WMA's to fulfill their statutory responsibilities. Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) are areas of communal land set aside exclusively as habitat for wildlife by member villages. Reacting concerning the negative development, some of the WMA's  leaders, investors, citizens and the conservationists in Ikona WMA in Mara region, Burunge WMA (Manyara),  Enduimet ( Arusha) and the Mbomipa WMA in Iringa region, observed that without improvements in relevant laws and regulations, the WMA's will automatically fail to operate and eventually die. The chairman of the Association of Tourism Operators in the country (TATO), who owns several hotels and tourist camps in WMA areas,  Mr. Wilbard Chambulo said the government should improve the laws and regulations of WMA so that they can perform and encourage the investors to continue investing into the areas. "The set rulling regulations towards investing into the WMA's in the country have some shortfalls that dilute the investor's investing morale. For instances, most potential investors seeks for a long-term investing contracts while assured for their security,  but there're some unscrupulous leaders with the WMA's who are handling their positions unprofessional and greedily hence discouraging the investors," he explained.     Alluding to the specific nuisance that irks the investors, he unveiled that the WMA's leaders are often preferring to enter into short- term contracts with the investors, whereby if it happens others investors are cropping up seeking to invest in the same area, they have always been keen to revoke the existing contract in favour of the new investors who injects them with some incentives.  Due to the existing challenges,  he communicated that most of the giant investors are shunning way from investing into the areas, among others, due to poor security as well as encroachment of livestock and illegal poaching.  Chambulo added that most of the WMA are managed by unqualified leaders who always prioritizing their personal interest rather than working to preserve and improve the key areas. An officer  from Zara Tours Company,  who preferred to remain anonymous, said the frequent challenges in WMA's operating rules was the other problem which frustrating the investors. The officer, who have invested in the Ikona WMA area, added that: "WMA has many challenges, but the biggest one is on the side of management of investment and conservation issues, but also the issue of not having enough income. A conservation researcher, Hillary Mrosso observed that if there are no improvements in the laws and regulations, many WMA's in the country will stop operating.  Mrosso who has done research in Mbomipa WMA located in Iringa region, said WMA's management in the country have a series of problems, including access to needed funds and in attracting investors. On his side, the secretary of the WMA's headquarters, Mr. Jeremiah Bishoni expressed that the other setback haunting the WMA's in the country is failure by some investors to issue payment on framed time. "The WMA's are also failing to operate fruitful because the funds collected are all sent to the treasury and then returned, which is a long process, for example, we at the WMA headquarters have not received the funds for the income of 2023 until now, we have only received four months of last year's funds" he said. He added that it was prudent for the government to return the WMA's funds to the director of wildlife as it was the case before 2018 so that they get the money on time. "We have so far  talked a lot over the need to have the fund returned to the WMA's on proper time from the state coffer in order to allow timely implementation of various projects," he expressed.  And the secretary of Burunge WMA, Mr. Benson Mwaise said he believes the government will improve the laws and regulations of WMA to reduce conflicts and enabling them to operate more professionally.  In his observations, the secretary of Ikona WMA, Mr. Yusuph Manyanda admitted the presence of the challenges in the operation of the WMA, saying they have already sent complaints to the Prime Minister's Office, and to the speaker of the Parliament as well as other leaders, but with no good avail. "For example, this year, we have not received any income from January until now, and do not have subsidies from the government. Failure to get money on proper time have always been thwarting our efforts to implement conservation activities, but also, to cater for other key issues" he stated.  He informed that the area was receiving good number of visitors who are paying money, but after being dispatched to the treasury office as directed by the relevant law, there have been unnecessary delay in the return of their share, the poor manner which weakens their performance.  "We had a meeting in Dodoma with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, to discuss these challenges, we went to the Parliament and have an audience with the Speaker, but nothing good have been done," he informed.  Jeremiah Isaya, who is a resident of Tingatinga village, one of the villages that make up Enduimet WMA, said he does not see any reason for the existence of WMA because the projects are currently not having any positive results. "There is a problem in the WMA, we see tourists coming but the leaders say there is no money, I don't know if there is a fund, now it is better that we return some of our areas to be used for breeding because there is no profit like before" he says However, the Director of the Wildlife Department, Dr. Fortunata Msoffe, who was recently appointed to the position, when asked to discuss over the challenges,  said the Head of the WMA desk in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism was the one responsible. "I am still in the process of handing over, I believe the ministry is working on the challenges facing the  WMA, but there is an officer who can explain more at the moment" Dr. Msoffe responded. However, when contacted, the Head of the WMA desk in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Ms. Rose Joseph said she cannot discuss the issue without obtaining permission. Worth around 45m/-, the timely support donated through the Wheelchair Foundation (WF) gears to help the handiccaped group to be free to take part in diverse economic activities and thus improving their livelihoods. The Association, ChemChem, is a registered Non-Profit Organization (NGO), located within the Burunge Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in northern Tanzania Its core mission is to work in partnership with key stakeholders to conserve the Tarangire and Manyara ecosystems while simultaneously empowering local communities. Speaking during a brief ceremony for the official handover of the vital facilities to the intended beneficiaries, the District Commissioner (DC) for Babati, Mr Lazaro Twange he hailed the Association for their patriotic assistance towards the physical challenged citizens. He urged the communities residing in Manyara Region to stand at forefront in improving and managing environmental conservation so as to attract more tourists and investors, the development which he sounded optimistic will see the receiving further assistances. The DC observed that the support communicated a clear message over existence of good and mutual relations between the investor of ChemChem Association and the citizens of the area. "Apart from support, the investor of ChemChem has always been injecting different supports towards improving service delivery in the education, health as well as the water sector, " he added. He challenged the citizens in the region, particularly in the Burunge Widlife Management Area to strengthen working tie with the investor in order to further curtailing incidences of illegal poaching, and attracting more investor in the wildlife endowed zone mapped in the northern part of Tanzania. On her part, the Director General (DG) of Chemchem Association, Ms.Fabia Bausch expressed to have been impressed with the good manner in which the citizens in the area are collaborating well with the reputable Association. Apart from the generously support, she informed that the Association will continue to issue numerous assistances towards the citizens dwelling in the area. According to Ms. Bausch, the support will include provision of capitals and entrepreneurship skills to the economic deprived women, but also, to back up efforts on the war against illegal poaching. " We have also been, and will continue to sponsor the children from the marginalized families to access better education, " she noted. Enabling the women to participate and benefiting accordingly in the tourism sector is also part and parcel of the Association's interventions, according to her. Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries of the donated wheelchairs, Ms. Maria Haido expressed the time-heart appreciation, saying the facilities would help them to venture into profitable economic activities, ever than before. The Association Manager, Mr.Martin Mng'ongo unveiled during the colorful ceremony that they're envisioning to donate the similar support to the needy citizens in the other part of the country, if all goes well. Burunge Wildlife Management Area (BWMA) is located in Babati District, Manyara Region along Arusha-Babati-Singida-Dodoma highway, about 120 kilometres from tourist city of Arusha. The potential area for the country’s wildlife and tourism activities have been experiencing bad spate of illegal poaching, especially towards the giraffes. CONSERVATION In 2009, the Kwakuchinja corridor, which connects Tarangire National Park with Lake Manyara National Park, was declared extinct in a study report by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). Similarly, the Burunge WMA was depleted of wildlife. Within 12 years, CCA’s efforts in collaboration with the Tanzanian government to monitor the corridor have contributed to the restoration of wildlife to the area. Thousands of wild animals including elephants, buffaloes, lions and giraffes are now migrating freely through the corridor. The ultimate goal of CCA is to fully rehabilitate and conserve the Kwakuchinja Corridor, ensuring the preservation of the link between the two national parks and protecting the ecosystem. However, illegal activities continue to be a major problem in the Kwakuchinja corridor: poaching, logging for charcoal, overgrazing, and roadkill still remain as major threats. CCA supports the joint anti-poaching team of 38 male and female rangers to ensure effective patrol and wildlife protection. Through the SMART data collection system, CCA’s patrol team records accurate and reliable data of wildlife movements and incidents to crack down on illegal activities in the Kwakuchinja corridor with the aim of strengthening the operationalization of the corridor. And they're now selling their sorghum for up to 780/-per kilo this year, compared to just 250/- per kilo three years ago,” Dan Collison, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Farm Africa expressed during his special tour of the farmers. He expressed that, in the semi-arid region of Dodoma, most of the smallholder farmers rely on the sorghum they grow to feed their families, but low yields have regularly pushed people into hunger. “An increasingly volatile climate endangers smallholders’ food security. Adopting improved sorghum varieties and production practices is vital in allowing the farmers to achieve a surplus, even in drought conditions,” he observed. And the CEO informed that, during the first phase of the project which ran from 2019 to 2022 the sorghum growers in Dodoma were equipped with the skills , the development which assisted them to transform from subsistence to commercial agriculture and thus, saw them increasing productivity of sorghum farming by 30 percent. “During the project’s first phase, we managed to support the involved farmers to adopt new techniques that boost yields, build resilience to extreme weather and protect the environment. Moreover, we train them in warehouses and cooperatives to process and store farmers’ produce,” he informed. Moreover, he detailed that we support them to diversify crop production and develop long-term business plans to manage climate risks, as well as how best to use digital technology to provide farmers with market information so that they can decide when and how much to sell sorghum. “There’s a potential market for sorghum, not only with Tanzania Breweries, but with buyers coming from all over the region, from Rwanda and South Sudan to source the high-quality grain, and thus, we have seen the need to empower the growers so that they can increased quality in order to fetch higher prices,” he insisted. Through the project’s assistance, the group has figured out some new ways of adding value to their sorghum. Value addition means taking the original product and processing it to make something new, then selling it for more,” he detailed. Dwelling over the project’s future plans, he communicated that the vision was to build on the successes and learning of the first phase. “We will continue to support farmers in Dodoma to transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture as a way to boost economic growth and reduce poverty, but also, the project will further support the farmers to build their climate resilience and food security through better access to markets and value chains and sustainable management of natural resources,” Collison informed. When the farmers are not growing sorghum, he added, they’re growing off-season vegetables, irrigating plots for tomatoes, onions and leafy greens that improve household incomes as well as dietary diversity. “Word from the government agriculture extension agents, from the radio and the weather apps is that the El Niño charged November rains will be heavy and widespread, setting up a good 2024 harvest, we will work tirelessly to assist the farmers to yield bumper in this season,” he assured.

Minister Jafo expressed his appreciation yesterday during his special tour of the country’s mega power project in the Rufiji River in eastern Tanzania. He made the tour for the purpose of inspecting the progress of the project as well as the manner to which NEMC is working to ensure the implementation of the project does not pollute the surrounding environment. “This is a huge project which involves more than 12,000 people on the site and due to its nature it automatically produces different forms of waste. I have been impressed with the decision by NEMC to set up a permanent camp here in order to ensure the Environmental Management Act is effectively observed,” he said. Together with that, minister Jafo spoke over the to ensure for the effective conservation of water sources at the Kilombero and Ruaha rivers, added that the ongoing project was vital in helping the country to cheat a spate of power outages. “Apart from increasing the availability of electricity supply, completion of this project is projected to play a major role to combat floods, improving irrigation agriculture as well as reducing use of charcoal and firewood among the citizens,” he observed. Giving further advantages of the project, he said the initiative will increase the availability of water and unlock a prestigious opportunity for the country to embark on water tourism.

The Executive Secretary of the mining commission, Eng. Yahya Ismail Samamba yesterday told this publication during an interview that the unfriendly development was thwarting the smooth metamorphosis of the country’s key economic sector. Not only that, but he communicated that the defaulters were denying the government patriotic opportunity to gain needed revenue collection from the prestigious facet. “We’re appreciating the good contributions by all investors in helping develop the country’s mining sector. That's why we’re reminding them to fulfill their statutory obligations in order to have the sector run successfully,” he expressed. In order to facilitate the payment of the debts in question, Eng Samamba kindly urged the license holders to go to the resident mines offices in all regions across the country in order to agree on the best way to pay the debts in installments. He insisted that the commission will take legal action against all owners who will fail to comply with the given instructions, added: “We would like to remind them that the period of three months to pay voluntarily has expired on September 30, 2023 and thus, we have patriotically decided to offer them a special grace period to service their debts,” The Mining Commission was established under the Mining Act 2010 as amended by Written Laws (Miscellaneous Amendment) Act 2017. The Commission came into existence through the Government Notice No. 27 issued on 7th July, 2017. The Commission has taken over all operational functions that were being performed by the minerals division under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and all functions that were being performed by Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA) and Tanzania Diamond Sorting Organization (TANSORT). The responsibility of the minerals division is now to advise the Minister on all matters related to the mining sector. The aim of the Commission is to enhance management of the mining sector and to ensure that the government is benefiting from the income generated in a sustainable manner.

"We have so far entered into agreement with the Kilimanjaro-based Galax Food and Beverages Ltd to design and produce the small-sized processed yogurt milk sachets that will be marketed to the pupils at the patriotic prices of around 500/-," he briefed. He said as per the plan, the envisaged pilot project will be executed in some of the schools to be selected in the region mapped in the north-eastern part of the country. According to him, implementation of the pilot project will serve as a key podium to acquire pre-experience on how professional to run the eagerly-awaited school milk program, the initiative which will cover the whole country. If all goes well, when taking shape, the school milk program (SMP) is expecting to cover the whole country tarting with the schools in the areas where milk is available and the presence of dairy processing. Under the timely program, the milk products to be distributed to the students will be the processed milk, either pasteurized, UHT, cultured milk or yoghurt depending on the availability and infrastructure of the area, and the quantity of milk supplied can are of 150mls to 200mls produced, whereby parents are sensitized about the benefits of the program and are encouraged to contribute money for the purchase of milk for their children to take during the break time. But despite the efforts, the vital program been limited in terms of coverage, access of dairy products to school children, involvement of stakeholders,” according to Dr. Msalya. And he added, during the past, one of the typical successful models in the implementation of the program was donor funded, thus questionable in terms of sustainability. He detailed, among the seven specific objectives incorporates a move to enhance and strengthen participation of parents and other stakeholders in the program, to determine context specific modalities for implementation of the program, to identify mechanisms for coordination and collaboration of sustainably implementation of the school program. Dr. Msalya insisted that the program, SMP, was of paramount importance as it helps families support their children’s education while protecting their food security as a way also to break the intergenerational cycle of hunger and poverty that affects vulnerable families and communities. “Implementation of this program plays a meaningful role to help spur school enrolment and reduce absenteeism whereby once the children are in schools, the program can also contribute to their learning through avoiding hunger and expanding their cognitive abilities,” Dr. Msalya observed. To ensure the sustainability of the country-wide program, the Registrar informed that the parent ministry and the dairy board planned every financial year to construct 10 Milk Collection Centers (MCCs) and establish eight selling points to facilitate easy distribution of milk to schoolchildren. “Together with that, he said the government has removed VAT on packaging materials, Cans, Cold rooms and Cold trucks to ensure safety, nutrition, convenience and affordability of milk,” he expounded. Evidence from the Tanzania National School Malaria and Nutrition Survey (SMNS) of 2019 indicates that on average, children from public primary schools consumed limited diversified meals with animal source food being the least consumed food groups by majority of school children. “It is with this ground that the livestock sector has a significant role to play in making sure that its food system is delivering desired nutrition outcomes thus contributing to optimal health and nutrition status of school children,” Dr, Msalya noted. Among the stakeholders that involved in the development of the Action Plan for Implementation of of School Milk Program in Tanzania (2023-2028) include the President Office, (Regional Authority and Local Government), Prime Minister’s office, ministry of education, ministry of health, Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB). Others are Tanzania Milk Processors and their association (TAMPA), Tanga Fresh Limited, ASA Dairies Limited, Shambani Milk, Profate Dairy, Nronga Women Dairy, Land O’Lakes Venture 37, Heifer International (Heifer Tanzania), Solidaridad, Nutrition Connect, TETRA Pack and SNV to mention but a few.</div>

Aviv Tanzania Limited is a greenfield coffee plantation in the Songea district in south west Tanzania. Its parent company Olam International is committed to building sustainable supply chains from seed to shelf. Together with FMO, they have been able to further improve the set-up of their coffee plantation in Tanzania taking into account communities and ecosystems around their operations. This resulted in an approach that will serve as a blueprint for Olam’s future greenfield plantation activities. The company produces at least 4.5 percent of all the coffee which is being produced in the country and marketed outside the country. Speaking at the launch, Babati District Commissioner Lazaro Twange on behalf of the Regional Commissioner, said that the chemchem CUP , in spite of raising sports talents, promotes preservation. Twange has said that the 10 villages that make up Burunge WMA, ought to collaborate with the chem chem Association that has managed tourism and conservation exercises in the area. "We expect you to be good conservation ambassadors, provide information on those involved in poaching, and also continue to benefit from conservation," he said. The Founder Chemchem association, Fabia Bausch  said that the chemchem CUP since its beginning, has been known to be of great benefit to include the community in preservation through conservation. She said this year, for the first time, there will be 10 young ladies and soccer teams. She said that the institution has set aside more than Sh 99 milion to make this year's championship a success. Earlier, the chairman of the championship, Elasto Belela said that the preparations for the championship have been completed, and all participating teams have already been given sets of jerseys and balls for preparation. He said that the first winner will be given a prize of sh 2.5 million  the second 1.5 million the third 1 million. Belela said for Queens soccer winner 1.5 million,second winner 1milioni and Third team winner 500,000 He added under 18 winner will be given a prize of 1 million, Second winner 600,000 and third under 18 winner 400,000.
