venture economically onto poultry was also in the heart of the project’s implementation vision for the next three years.<br /><br />“The project is contemplating to impart the farmers with necessary skills on poultry project, and there will be several efforts to ensure they’re adopting improved crossbreed chicken as well as managing chicken disease,” he observed.<br /><br /> Through engaging into poultry programs, he expressed, the involving households will stand chances to improve their livelihoods, but also improve children’s health and cognitive development.<br /><br />Prof Erick Komba, the in help maintaining soil moisture and fertility.<br /><br />The Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI) in the project is to roll out to the farmers validated natural resources technologies, dubbed insitu rainwater harvesting technologies and soil erosion control measure-Fanya Juu/Chini terraces.<br /><br /> In general, the other initiative under the project’s vision includes efforts to promote soil conservation practices, improve soil fertility management in degraded areas, and deployment of innovative water harvesting methods.<br /><br />To ensure for better results, the project Soil acidity refers to the concentration of hydrogen and aluminium in soils.<br /><br />At least 32.7 million hectares of land in Tanzania are acidic, being about 14.6 million hectares which are currently under cultivation, the situation which is thwarting the needed metamorphosis in the country’s crops production and productivity.<br /><br />Among the tall effects of soil acidity to crop production include a sharp decrease availability of essential nutrients to crops, increased concentration of toxic elements (Aluminium) in soils thus damaging crop roots, decrease crop production, and effects of soil acidity is vital to enable the sector to grow to that effect,” he said.<br /><br />Chimagu urged members of the meeting to ponder over the proper approach to which the project will apply to have the farmers under soil acidity adopting proper use of ag-limes.<br /><br />“Majority of the farmers are not aware of the use of ag-lime as they have for years been sensitized to only use fertilizer, so the project must come-up with a useful and simple approach to empower them,” he suggested.<br /><br />And he added, the project must sensitize the lime producing factories to expand production so as to ensure for availability, accessibility and affordability of agricultural limes towards the intended farmers in the needed areas.<br /><br />Adding his voice to the meeting’s objectives, the Director General (DG) of the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Dr Thomas Bwana, observed that acidic soils was standing tall among the major factor that diluting efforts by the country’s agriculture system to attain the needed crops production and productivity.<br /><br />He added, the so far conducted trials by TARI in Mbozi and Geita have proved that use of ag-limes Management from TARI detailed that although agriculture plays a vital role to the livelihood of Tanzanians, the sector is however facing many challenges which impede crop productivity and production.<br /><br />The challenges, according to him incorporate low knowledge of soil health, inappropriate use of fertilizers, depleted soil fertility, inappropriate agronomic practices, and low knowledge on land suitability (where to grow what).<br /><br />“There are two types of soil acidity, active and exchangeable soil acidity, whereby active soil acidity is easy to measure and can easily be corrected by liming, but it is difficult to measure exchangeable acidity as you are required to measure aluminium and hydrogen concentrations,” he observed.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />He informed that, at present in Tanzania, aluminium cannot be measured by neither soil scanners, nor pH meters as its correction may require huge amounts of lime and many cycles of re-application.<br /><br />Detailing over the acidity saturation in soils of Tanzania, Dr Mwango said about 53 percent to 71 percent of applied fertilizers are lost, which means for every 100/- invested in fertilizers between 53/- and 71/- are not beneficial to the crop.<br /><br />Wrapping up the meeting, the involved stakeholders informed that, combining ag-lime and mineral fertilizers in appropriate rates can possibly increase yield three times for maize, and two times for bean, respectively in Geita district, whereby the trials proved that maize increased from 5bags/acre to 15bags/acre, and beans increased from 1.0bag/acre to 3.3bags/acre.<br /><br />According to them, the same treatment increased yield 1.8 times and 1.7 times for maize and beans, respectively in Mbozi district, in which maize increased from 10bags/acre to 18bags/acre, and beans increased from 2.0 bags/acre to 3.4bags/acre.<br /><br />It was concluded in acidic soils that application of fertilizers alone without liming cannot increase crop yields appreciably.<br /><br /><br /><a problems because soil acidity causes between 20 and 80 percent loss of fertilizers applied in acid soils.<br /><br />They said lime application will correct this loss if targeted to the areas and thus, it is recommended to develop a program that makes lime easily accessible to farmers.<br /><br />Moreover, they stated that lime availability is limited in areas affected by acid soils and however, lime deposits are located in areas where acidity is a problem. christened ‘Afya Yangu’ the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which receives its comfortable funds from Pangaea Zimbabwe Aids Trust (PZAT) among others focuses to scale up necessary health needs towards the homeless youth and children, without any stigma as well as depression.<br /><br />Giving an exclusive interview to this publication in Dodoma Capital City, the NGO’s Head of Programs, Elizabeth Kafuku detailed as part to implement the project fruitfully, during last year, the initiative conducted a thorough situational analysis which covered at least 583 homeless children, the study which unearth a pathetic revelations.<br /><br />She briefed, the research established that majority of the hapless street children are subjected to different dangerous atrocities, including array of serious unfriendly -human menaces,” she expressed.<br /><br />And Kafuku added, “For instances, in Dodoma city, despite of engaging onto use of narcotic drugs, our survey established some cases, at least six cases, in which some of the street children were kidnapped during mid-night hours and to later on found their dead body dumped with some of their organs chopped off,”<br /><br />Sexual negligence, unsafe abortion, stigmatization, suicides, mental illness and HIV/ids infections also stands among the dangerous cases that haunting the said young groups who are dwelling and and the other development partners in order to address these challenges in a more sensible manner with an eye to ensure the vulnerable children are given psycho-physical and health assistances, along
